Market Commentary: The Treat Market Closed Slightly Higher Than the Sofa

This is the weekly market commentary from the research desk of Whisker Wealth Management. All figures are invented. All views are the views of cats. Nothing here constitutes advice, and some of it constitutes a nap.

Overview

The Treat Market closed slightly higher on Friday after a quiet session. Volume was thin, in the sense that a single cat watched the bowl for most of the afternoon. The Sofa Index was unchanged. The Window Ledge was strong early in the week and drifted lower once the sun moved to the neighbours.

Movers

  • Tuna: up sharply after a rumour that a tin had been opened in another room
  • Kibble: flat, as it has been since the last decade
  • Dairy: down, following the quiet but firm intervention of a person with a spoon
  • Feather Toys: volatile, as usual, with sudden moves at two in the morning

Sector review

The Fish sector held steady. Analysts note that fish remains the cornerstone of any balanced portfolio, though several partners expressed concern about a possible overweight position in salmon. Poultry showed modest gains. Anything labelled Gravy performed above expectations and has been upgraded to Buy.

Economic data

Weekly data from the Kitchen Statistical Office showed that the number of open cupboards rose slightly. Analysts read this as a sign of confidence. Meanwhile the Door Closed Index fell to a low last seen during a thunderstorm.

Outlook for next week

We expect a period of consolidation. The sun is forecast to return around eleven, and we expect sunbathing activity to pick up. We also expect a bird to appear on the fence, which would cause a short, sharp rally in staring. Any decline in staring should be treated as a buying opportunity.

Analyst view

Penny, our Chief Risk Officer, remains cautious. She notes that any day might include the vacuum cleaner, and that markets tend to dislike surprises. Sir Reginald, by contrast, is relaxed. He has taken a long position on a patch of sunlight and plans to hold it until it moves.
